Journal of China in Global and Comparative Perspectives
Volume 4, 2018
Abstract: Based on the Chinese General Social Survey 2008 (CGSS2008) and the UK’s Taking Part Survey (TPS2008) datasets, the authors of this paper conduct a comparative analysis of Chinese and British people’s subjective well-being (SWB), and the results are interpreted from the theoretical perspectives of life course, social integration and status differentiation. The findings are as follows: (1) average SWB is higher in the UK than in China; (2) people’s age and health conditions affect their SWB in both China and the UK; (3) people who are highly integrated into society tend to have higher SWB, but religion and employment have different effects on SWB in China and the UK; and (4) socioeconomic status increases people’s SWB in China but not in the UK.
