‘Modernity’ or ‘Eurocentrism’— A Comparative Study of Language Reforms in Turkey and China by Derin Bohcacihat
Abstract: This article aims to discuss the colonial discourses that underpin Chinese and Turkish views on modernity in the early 20th century and how these views were reflected in their respective language reform movements. I attempt to do so by first outlining the history of language reform in China and Türkiye, and then analysing it though a comparative-critical lens, drawing out the influence of coloniality and other power dynamics on the intellectual terrain that informed these policies. This comparison reveals how language reform in both countries were carried out based on internalized Orientalist stereotypes by elites, and demonstrates the profound impact of coloniality on the modern languages of the two countries. Through this study, I hope to create more awareness of the globally shared traces of coloniality, and highlight how even though the formal colonial era has ended, global colonial histories remain embedded in contemporary Asian society, from the Bosphorus to the Pacific.
