This article explores issues in the translation of philosophical concepts and religious texts through a review of two works: Ritual and Respect: Extending Chinese Philosophy in a Comparative Context by Roger T. Ames, and Interweaving Rituals: Funerary Rites in Sino-European Cultural Exchanges in the Late Ming and Early Qing by Nicolas Standaert. The paper analyzes the challenges of translating core Confucian concepts, particularly ren (仁), and highlights the semantic shifts that occur across cultural contexts. It proposes transliteration, footnotes, and explanatory translation as potential strategies. The article further discusses the importance of terminology translation in philosophical texts, emphasizing how the disciplinary nature of terms affects the accuracy of the translation. Through comparative case studies, it evaluates the applicability of various translation strategies. In addition, the paper introduces self-translation as a unique field in translation studies, analyzing both its flexibility and limitations, as well as its implications for translation theory and practice. Through these discussions, the article reflects on the construction of a philosophy of translation, emphasizing that translation is not merely a linguistic transfer, but a crucial channel for cultural and intellectual exchange—one that deserves deeper study and critical engagement.
