摘要:《红楼梦》故事人物众多,通过人物对话反映了中国古代社会人文科学和社会科学的方方面面,是名副其实的中国文化百科全书。人物话语呈现方式对于小说人物形象塑造、社会行为表达和作品主题意义生成的重要性不言而喻。本文通过考查《红楼梦》霍克思译本和杨宪益夫妇译本前二十回的直接引语英译偏离现象,发现偏离集中体现为直接引语转译为间接引语和言语行为叙述体。直接引语英译偏离使得译文话语呈现方式更为多元,同时译文非直接引语的话语简洁性也加快了叙事节奏和故事进程,从而更好地满足了目标语读者的审美期待。与多数研究不同的是,本研究强调霍译本和杨译本的共通之处。

Abstract: Hong Lou Meng features a myriad of story characters whose conversation touches upon various aspects of humanities and social sciences in ancient Chinese society, thus making this great novel an authentic encyclopedia of Chinese culture. The importance of speech presentation in shaping the image 张大群of story character, representing social behaviour and establishing the thematic meaning of the novel can never be overemphasized. Through scrutinizing the translation of direct speech in the first twenty chapters of Hong Lou Meng, this study finds that indirect speech and narrative report of speech acts are two main types for the deviation of direct speech in Hawkers’ The Story of the Stone and Yang & Gladys’ A Dream of Red Mansions. This certain deviation not only contributes to a more diversified speech presentation in the two translations, but more importantly, pushes forward narrative progression substantially in the target texts, thus meeting the aesthetic expectations of the receivers. Different from most of the studies, the present study emphasizes the commonalities shared by Hawkers’ and Yang’s translations.
