Abstract: Starting from the Chinese translation of the term ‘transcultural’, this article responds to SHEN Qi’s commentary on Shuo Yu’s former long articles (published in two parts) on transculturality with a case study on China–Europe encounters. She summarizes the status quo of the translation and studies of the prefixes ‘inter’, ‘cross-’ and ‘trans-’ and introduces transcultural study achievements in anthropology, sinology and Latin American literature. In view of the paradox of accelerated globalization and the return of nationalism and communitarianism, and of living in a transcultural reality but refusing to accept it, the author proposes three specific suggestions with regard to constructing transcultural knowledge.
