The evolving perceptions of China in Western thought show that China, initially admired during the Enlightenment, was later viewed as intellectually stagnant by figures like Hegel and Weber. This perception shifted again, romanticizing Chinese wisdom while underestimating its contributions to social sciences and humanities. Notable is the significant gap in intellectual exchange between China and the West, due in part to language barriers and selective exposure. Despite Chinese scholars’ excellence in sciences, their work in social sciences and humanities is less recognized globally. Past efforts to bridge this gap included translation projects in the 1990s, which were hampered by funding issues. However, a large number of Chinese social scientific works funded by the Chinese Academic Translation Projects of the National Social Science Fund since 2014 have been subject to censorship.
The Global China Academy (GCA) offers a platform to make Chinese social sciences and humanities accessible to non-Chinese audiences, fostering intellectual exchange and independent thinking. Through its publishing arm, Global Century Press (GCP), established in 2014, it has developed eight book series on specific themes. They are: Chinese Concepts (CC), Chinese Discourse (CD), Understanding China and the World (UCW), China and Chinese in Comparative Perspectives (CCCP), Globalization of Chinese Social Sciences (GCSS), Transcultural Experiences with ‘Three Eyes’, (TETE), China Urbanization Studies (CUS) and Cutting Edge and Frontiers (CEF).
