After outlining the discourse construction of the low-carbon economy in Chinese, British, and American newspapers in Chapters Four, Five, and Six, this chapter attempts to answer the fourth explanatory research question mentioned in Chapter One: What is the relationship between the discourse on the low-carbon economy in newspapers from the United States, the United Kingdom, and China and the respective political systems of these three countries? To explain the discourse constructions and features found in the previous three chapters, we place these findings within a social context, analyzing national interests embedded in these discourses and factors such as politics, economy, culture, and history.
This chapter explores the relevant social backgrounds of China, the UK, and the US. Through a social context analysis of China, the UK, and the US, it links these social contexts with language use and discourse features in the mainstream newspapers of the three countries. The chapter first discusses the political and economic systems of China, the UK, and the US. It then addresses the production methods of newspapers and their target readership in these three countries. Lastly, it delves into the journalistic codes of conduct in the three nations, interpreting how the aforementioned factors influence the construction of discourse on low-carbon.
